Description

Hi Rendo folks! Here is a sneak preview of my new series "Photos of Ghosts" (Kudos go out to the Italian band PFM for the title) This is a self portrait during one setup I performed last weekend. Not a great pic, but you can see where I'm going with this :) The story behind this and the massive amount of old cameras I now own is quite unbelievable. A bit over 2 weeks ago, there was a Craigslist ad that said "Free Cameras, 100's of them" I thought this was a hoax, however since the physical address was so close to my shop, I had to check it out. The first morning I was shocked, boxes and boxes of collectible cams!! Thats not all, they continued new lots of different flavors for 2 weeks (except weekends lol.. ya, I drove by every day in the early AM) One day would be 50's-60's range finders, another day would be Box cams. (Pinches self again) Out of 73 cameras, 65 actually work, and range from 1908-1965 oh my! Though many use film that is no longer made, I have chosen 11 for this new series, though here is a source I found for 127, 122, 620 and 828 size film called Central Camera in Chicago, which will increase the number of boxes and folders to experiment with) Ahh the passion of a new mission:) The first batch from a 1917 Kodak Hawk-Eye Folding Pocket Camera 120 arrive tomorrow. All the best! Kurt

Since I've seen photos of what was called ghosts, I wasn't taken aback by the title, and figured we were in for a ghostly treat. ;) This is a great display of your incredible find and good fortune, Kurt. Hope you have lots of fun and a great outcome with this series. Hugs, Suzanne

I'm flabbergasted! This is a collection that is priceless! I recognize 4 of these right away...ones that I have used in years past. I remember the 127 and 122 film... That must date me... My brownie box was an amazing camera and the first that I ever owned by myself. I remember you held it at your waist and looked down into the view finder. The image appeared upside down. The bulbs were in a big reflector and and blinded the subject ever time! You got to feel good about this!

Your patience and thoroughness in presenting this historical treasure is deeply admired. It must be a calling. As for me, these artifacts are the very reason I never got very far in photography. Guessing with a viewfinder and mixing chemicals in the bathtub with towels over the light cracks is no fond memory for me. The few treasures I retain from that bygone era long to be scanned into a ".jpg" file to be healed. I had to await the digital era for it to become attractively easy and fun! I assure you I will view each photo you offer from these treasured artifacts with utmost respect and appreciation.

Wow how amazing and how lucky are you, I am thrilled for you and look forward to your future uploads. I know cameras similar to some of those, will have been owned by my Uncle who was a keen photgrapher years ago. He had his own dark room, and also he had his own cinema in the garden, so would take movie film too all those years ago; way back. We loved it going to his cinema when I was a child to look at films. Great set up of cameras you have there, well done my friend - hugs Jane xx
