The "tree of pain" is a fascinating theme --- recently, it showed up in Frank Miller's "300". The earliest example I've seen of it is Jacques Callot

This is very expressive. If there was a bit of glowing metal in there too, you would've captured the chronic neuropathic pain disorder that I have. Because that's pretty much how it feels.
