Description

Leading the way to the top of Mauna Ulu with Lady Carrie right behind me, I used my trekpod and tapped the surface in front of us to make sure it was safe. We slowly moved towards the crater. In some areas, the lava surface felt and sounded very fragile - hollow. And in other areas, the broken and collapsed surface lava proved that we needed to be very careful. Here at the top, the edge had much earth-cracks around it and it looked very unstable. We decided not to get any closer than we are. It is a long ways for help if anything happened. Mauna Ulu had erupted in 1969 and ended in 1974. It still has strong sulfur fumes coming out of cracks around this crater. But life goes on with little plant life growing along its crater edges. Aloha and thank you for viewing

I cannot work out whether you are brave or mad? :) But this is a spectacular image and description. Do you feel very connected to the earth up there? I mean in a spiritual way? I'm looking forward to the rest of them. Please do not fall in.

This is so awesome! The size of the crater is evident and the power it still commands is seen in this photo. You really got a great pov here. Outstanding.

Glad to hear you took it slow and easy. This kind of lava is very fragile. Many people don't realize it is hollow underneath. Good to see you made it back safe and sound. Nice shot. Aloha

Nice shot and I'm glad you decided to play it safe rather than be sorry. You're close enough here to give a great POV anyhow.
