I have always liked 'llIustration' and tend to produce it either as Cover Art or Sequential imagery. The former is probably the more challenging because of the balance that needs to be struck between form and content, decoration and narrative. Cover Art, like the short story, gets a limited shot at indicating what lies beneath the cover. My current preoccupation has been described, and I think aptly, as 'nostalgic sci fi and pulp'. And someone also suggested that it might be a little too late to revive the 'adventure genre'.
Stylistically, I'm keen on the commercial illustration of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publication (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics). There is so much creativity and artistic competence to found on the covers and within the pages of even the most mundane examples.
It is over the last 7 years that I have started to use, and like, digital media. My working methods are still a little too intuitive and involve the usual squinting and standing back that one associates with traditional media, but I am enjoying making imagery more than ever and would now like to explore the possibilities of illustrating written stories (preferably by working with an author).
Interests: Commercial illustration and sequential imagery of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publications (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics).

very dramatic POV and composition, perfect "cover pretender", as always.

I simply LOVE the dramatic use of white for the sky; it really works with the simple tones and enhances the drama (I definitely prefer it to the original render with the blue sky that, somehow, lent it a sense of serenity that was at odds with the emotion of the piece). Now, I’m wondering if I’m being particularly grouchy today, but despite loving certain aspects of the image, as a whole I must say that I don’t think it’s up to your usual standards. Two things are quite distracting for me: 1) The space at the bottom looks like it was left “blank/uncluttered” so the editor could add some more text down there to advertise other stories in the issue, or perhaps more about the cover text. Without it, the whole bottom of the page just looks unfinished. 2) The angle of the plane is just wrong. That particular plane, if memory serves me, used forward-mounted machine guns, so in order to shoot at the Jeep, it would need to be facing them. As it is, it looks almost like it’s flying along side them, as if it were an escort, rather than trying to kill them. The plane in the back has a better angle, but even it isn’t quite right. Even though I love the whole Rat Patrol vibe (and think the expression on the driver’s face is particularly well done), this time the cover kinda feels like it’s a work in progress, rather than a finished piece that’s been completed to your usual high standards. Nevertheless, you know I love your work, so thanks for posting it (and especially thanks for the link to the original render).

I prefer this version over the Cornucopia version. I think I'd disagree about the plane position though. While the plane would point at the jeep while shooting, once it closed with the jeep, it would presumably have pull out of the dive and then over fly the target area ?

Another great image. I feel the plane could certainly be at that angle as it is already past the point of a dive and now pulling up...exposing it's underbelly to 'rat patrol' guy. The distress is particularly good on this one and the typeface is MAGNIFICENT! Really good. I'm with mmitchell on the bottom of the book...looks like it needs more words. "They only thought they could run..." or something. I always enjoy looking at your covers-- they are great and take me back to a much simpler time.

thanks for the memories ! the angle of the planes looks ok to me, as does everything else. my only query (a rather nit-picky one)would be if FW190s, which only arrived in North Africa in late November 1942, would ever have encountered the LRDG Chevy (which would have had a Bren gun mounted for such events) ?
