Description

From the view platform and my last post, turn right to face the south west and dawn is breaking over the dam....it's 5-30am... This is the Burdekin Dam, largest in my state of Queensland, built 20 years ago and has a capacity five times more than Sydney Harbour. She covers an area of some 23,000 hectares and holds 1,860,000 mega litres when full. The spillway wall is 876 metres long with a drop of 37 metres. 630,000 cubic metres of concrete went into building the spillway with another 900,000 cubic metres of landfill around the edges....when she spills over at a rate of .5 metres, it equates to 20,000 mega litres per day....this is one huge place!
