Description
this is dedicted to my late Grandmother Sarah S.(my mothers side) She came to the US on a sailboat from Switzerland in the late 1800's.
She settled in Indiana where she became a Mennonite. There she met my Grandfather(also from Switzerland).
They later settled in New York State, leaving the church.I remember them being protestant, but couldn't tell you which sect.
My memories recall a table filled with silver on Thanksgiving. They were both tough folks and the smiles were few and far between.
The depression was kind to them with grandpa E. retaining a job with Bell Systems.
So Happy Thanksgiving to all of us who come from immigrant stock..

While my thanksgiving was a month ago, I will celebrate another thanksgiving with those who come from immigrant stock. I am an immigrant myself, having come from Scotland when I was just three years old. There were supposed to be a whole bunch of people who were all supposed to emigrate to Canada at the same time. One by one they all dropped out citing a variety of excuses. My parents stuck to their guns and left for Canada anyways. I think they made a wise choice. I certainly have a different view of things in North America.
