Description

Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn, apparently received its name from the light of the rising sun that was reflecting off its surface. On many afternoons did I walk to the rivers edge across this temple and waited for the sun to set behind it. While there, I watched the activities that took place on the boats that were tied up along the rivers edge. Families were living on these boats, and I watched them cook, do their laundry, bath in the river and watched the children play in the river. And I watched the merchants in their long-tail boats going up and down the river. The atmosphere was so foreign, so different from anything I had ever experienced, that I never got tired of just observing. Generally, the people were so friendly, with easy and quick smiles, and I felt that I was in a fairy tale. This was before the influx of tourism from the West. There were very few European or American tourists. This picture was taken in October 1967 and was later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my last upload.
