Description

This image is meant to convey the desolation and environmental impact of a redundant oil rig - somewhere off North Scotland. This is one frame from a 10 minute animation dealing with climate change. Of course everything is simulated in a virtual 3D world.

Great rays. Did you mean to have oil on the water? Becasue it doesn't look so.

No oil on the water because I've assumed the oil companies would at least do the honourable thing and cap the well.

Very gloomy, dark and isolated. Not a place I'd want to be - very well conveyed.

I think you got your point across about the desolation and environmental impact of a redundant oil rig. Nice render and atmosphere.

Excellent render but I disagree with the sinister premise that oil rigs damage the environment. If you've ever been diving around an oil rig, it is usually teaming with life becayse the coral has something to latch onto. The Eco-Systems around oil rigs are a magnet for bio diversity.

dburdick, Thanks for you comments. I agree about the barnacles and coral but there is an awful lot of "mud" littering the seabed as a result of casing activity and this is extremely harmful to sea-life and not bio-degradable. The other aspect of oil and gas platforms is that is the toxic chemical mix that remains within the processing elements of the structure. This explains why the oil majors would prefer to leave the structure in place rather than decommission and break-up - it costs too many US Dollars. Regards and best wishes DW

Thank goodness they made these things so well that they will never rust out, decompose and fall into the ocean to dump all those toxins. I am so glad the oil companies really care about the quality of our lives. Excellent image, btw.
