Description

The Very Large Array, located in central New Mexico, is a large radio astronomy observatory consisting of 27 radio antennae in a Y-shape. This is just one arm of that Y-shape. They may look small, but they are not, they're huge. Each one is 82 feet in diameter, weighs 230 tons, can be moved on a series of rails, and when stretched out full length each arm is 13 miles long. It was featured in the Jodie Foster movie "Contact". Thanks very much for looking and have a great weekend.

My first look at the picture made me think of the movie Contact (one of my favorite movies), before I read what you wrote. This is a great picture and thank you for the interesting information about the array.

Fantastic shot...I have yet to make a pilgrimage there, but I will, especially since I am a science fiction writer and general astronomy buff, I love images like this...but aside from that, there's an intrinsic beauty to the VLA and other such observatories. By the way, it was also featured in the film 2010: Odyssey 2--a less successful endeavor than the original 2001: A Space Odyssey, but a good film nonetheless...at least the actors playing Russians spoke passably good Russian. :-)

I seen some men working on the surface of one concave antenna(television) and it gives a perspective on just how large they are.I understand they have a very close tolerance to be in sync.beautiful capture Maria.
