Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held images. I have not seen one of these ladybug larva since I got a digital camera. I never knew what they were till I saw one last year at: "BugGuide.Net", which is a great site for bug identifications. I am pretty sure the larvae I show in this collage is the one that molted into a full grown ladybug but I cannot be positive of that since I did not actually see it start the process. I found the larva on a Goldenrod plant on Tuesday and on Thursday I found the pupa case on the same plant. I brought it inside and got a couple of shots of the progress on Friday and by Saturday morning, it was ready to fly. Tomorrow, I will post an image of the fully formed Asian Multicolored Ladybird Beetle that was the final stage of this metamorphosis. FYI - this species is an introduced one to America and has almost replaced our native species. I also have a new larvae in a jar so this time I can try to get better and more detailed shots of this amazing change. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

AWESOME Set! I tried to get this done a while back. I didn't have any luck. Work got in the way. Really nice job. And the pics are well done! Bravo!

Wow! and Awesome! I never realized a ladybug ever started out as something looking so different than what is a commonly seen ladybug. A wonder project you have here and a fabulous collage! Thanks for sharing. ~Melinda~

Great set!! I never thought of containing them to take pics, what a good idea! I never forget my amazement when Mum showed me the process in progress when I was about 5: it stopped me trying to use them as cake decorations on my mud pies.

A truly facinating montage Lee, I would have said that the top three were caterpillars but they have three pair of legs so they are already an insect and then to metamorphosis into a lady bug, it's just fantastic. I think its about time you wrote a book with a title like 'The Bugs in my Back Yard'. I would most certainly be interested, I'm quite sure you have plenty more to find yet. Excellent capture's and presentation. Awesome!!!!!

Wonderful shot and a fine education for me..I have seen the larvae but had no clue these would become a ladybug..thought they were another bug.

super cool. I had no idea. I thought little lady bugs became big lady bugs. I'm dumb like that. Neat!

I was still in my infancy on RR but I also captured this incredible event. Something I had never seen until I got my digital. I never connected it all. I didn't do nearly the job you did tho! Very excellent photos!

A fascinating series Lee... and I have to agree with JeffG7BRJ... you should write a book on all of the amazing insects you have captured. Great job as always mate.
