Description
The pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus, habitat ranges the entire length of the Missouri, into the Mississippi River south to New Orleans. They prefer large, turbid, free-flowing river habitat with rocky substrate. Populations today are severely restricted due to dam construction along the length of the Missouri River, so the pallid sturgeon was listed as an endangered species in 1990. Because of this there is a lot of research going on to in attempts to recover the species. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the effort. I have started my master's program doing a population genetics study on the sturgeon in the Missouri river. This is a photo I snapped of a rather unlucky fellow who was scheduled for termination because he and several others from his year class are infected with a virus and cannot be released to infect other fish.

I first thought this was some sort of photo manipulation, what an amazing fish that is.

Yes, to see one in real life made me think primitive life form..a majestic animal in its own right and I do hope it can survive. Daming of rivers around here has cost us the mussels to a great extent and likely some fish we will never know about. Are there paddlefish in the Missouri, also? I will IM on that one. Best wishes in the education and is effecting some good.
Liam.
Great POV

Nice one, I am not sure if it is same spices as the one from Russia but in there they have problems also with all kinds of posions and rest of the things and they are protected but not enugh of people to take care of them and then black market too. I was fortunet to have chance to see them in pools for new generations which is awsom too bad this fish had lived for so many millions of years and now so few of them. Good luck with project I hope it will be worthed.

Our sturgeon are disappearing here. They think over fished but the dams and divergence place a huge part as well. They were harvested for their roe for a very long time. I hope they come back. They are so very prehistoric!

I keep koi and other ornimental fish in my pond and I see sturgeon whenever I go to the pond stockists, I have never thought about buying one though, I think they are rather ugly fish myself. Excellent capture of this one, a shame he faces the chop, but the virus cannot be allowed to pass to other fish. Excellent capture, good luck with your degree. Bravo!!!!!
