Why a cheat? Paint software, fractals, layering (as in UF), masking, ray tracing, morphing etc etc, they all are graphical digital techniques, all based on applied math. Only when you're working on a pure math text no artistic freedom is allowed (and even this is not 100% true). So don't bother, nothing cheating, use your talents and all available software, both, to create and there's nothing wrong with that. This one is a very cool and pretty one.
