Description
They kept our appointment and showed up between their pond and Interstate Highway 35 at Ottawa, KS. When they'd finished posing, their owner's mother picked me up and returned me to my parking location.
P.S. - These pure-bred, Watusi African imports were purchased as "exotics" by Richard Reed of Ottawa, KS.

I love bovine. I love every breed dairy and meat alike, but nothing fills me with so much wonder and pride as the Longhorn. These look to be full bred...so many you see now have been bred with other types to try to beef up (no pun intended)the muscles. These expansive horns are exactly what I like to see and not the thinner lighter ones.

Attempting to add some information to this posting, I managed to lose the commentary originally posted with this photo. Rather than risk further loss, I'll just put it here. These pure-bred Watusi cattle from Africa are found on the ranch of Richard Reed in Ottawa, KS. I've seen them as I passed on I-35 and made a personal appointment to stop the next time. The longhorns honored my appointment and seemed to enjoy posing between their pond and the highway. When they finished with me, the owner's mother drove up and gave me a ride back to my parked truck, which was about a mile away. She explained these are very powerful animals. Once one of them put his horns underneath the gate and just pulled it right out of the hinges. The one thing I would have preferred in this composition would have been to take advantage of a sunrise, which would have eliminated the shadows concealing their faces. Maybe next time.

Wonderful capture! I enjoy seeing the buffalo we have near here, and they raise them, but not to get to close for pictures. ;o) But I cheated, of course, and that was years ago. Maybe I'm more chicken now, and won't get too close, anymore. I'm interested in your second commentary. How did anyone get these from Africa? That couldn't have been too easy, red tape-wise.

Charlene, Judy Jackson, who is Richard's Mom, said he purchased them at an "Exotic" auction. Evidently they have such places in KS, OK, and TX, where imported animals are available. You're absolutely correct, the quarantine procedure is probably involved. It must be similar to gaining permission to put an animal in a zoo. As far as getting close, there was an 8-foot-tall steel fence, some pasture, and a pond between us. My optical zoom on the Nikon E8800 worked out okay here.

Looks as if every set may be different..the horns on the animal on the right have a sharper turn up angle...the Nikon did good..great shot..
