Description

On a cool Octobers day in 2005, we visited Monasterboice. There was a funeral there on that day for a young man who had been killed on one of the narrow, winding roads in the County. We waited respectfully until the service was over before we entered the grounds of this amazing site. One of the finest High Crosses in Ireland is to be found here, Muiredach's Cross, which inherited its name from the carvings of two cats at the West base, intertwined with the inscription which invokes prayer for the one who commissioned the work on the cross. Some scholars have speculated the person to be Muiredach mac Domhnaill, who was Abbot for the monastery, and who died in the late ninth century. There is something tottally surreal on this photo: I don't know if you edited it or not, but I first thought it was a render on the thumbnail preview... Nice job

Amazing, at first I thought the little bright bunches of flowers were done by using selective colouring. to me it looks like a trick of the eye. Bravo!

A lovely reminder of my time in ireland and its many treasures. The high crosses that remain are wonderful this is typical of medieval and Irish depictions

What an awe inspiring image, and a sense of foreboding, and wonder. Very interesting. As one graveyard we recently visited had posted on a sign against vandalism said, "Stop and read as you pass by, As you are now, Once was I, As I am now, You will be, Prepare for death and follow me."
