while the image is ok for a newbie, its a little boring! you could have done so much more with it , why have no background ? some far off mountains or a distant shoreline would add so much to the picture ,stepping stones in the middle of an ocean? where have they come from? The title " the tree of life " promises so much but then you use a bog standard tree straight out of the presets ! and the sky is the same, play around with the dials, create your own,try adding some mist give the illusion of depth, basically dont rely to much on presets try and be original I know what its like trying to get a response from your work , and a little criticism helps a hell of a lot when your learning ,I too am self taught, and many will say it shows ,but its easy to pick fault ,harder to explain how to improve your work as art is in the eye of the beholder, but that said you should see some of my early work ! ( some of the later pieces for that! )they was pathetic ! keep at it ,and learn to use one application well rather than 2 or 3 badly . hope its been an help .

Ive been using Bryce for 6 months or so myself and with me it is also an hobby so i can appreciate how hard it can be sometimes. This picture is nice concept, the idea has many possibilities. Maybe some of these suggestions will help you:) Try a small terrain in place of the stone for placing the tree you can give more form and texture to a terrain, work on the terrain in the editor with the dampen and erode tools and brushes, and change the grid to a finer grid for if you use it in the foreground. Try a material with several tones and up the bump height a little. Making the tree larger would give it more impact as it is the centre piece of the picture. Give the tree material a small amount of specularity and high light it with a light, try colouring the light for effect. Another terrain in the distance (I find using the arrow keys helps me to position it better, resize it until it looks right compared to other elements), connected with the stepping stones try angling the stepping stones between the two to give a better sense of distance. A really nice attempt.:)
