Description

ZOOM IN FOR THE BEST VIEW - Thanks. At a distance of 237 light-years, the first image of exosolar planet HDB 523652 was just a green dot circuited by silver and white pixels. The astronomer who discovered the planet nicknamed this new world 'Ariel'. The curious and ever present halo suggested an angel's name and the archangel Ariel was often depicted in robes of green. Found to be close to Earth mass, Ariel always attracted much scientific attention. Every new discovery (like oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere) made Ariel seem more and more like our world. Though not completely, a high percentage of water ice crystals in the upper atmosphere may be why Ariel is green not blue. And there was the surprising existence of a ring system as the halo turned out to be. Ariel (like Earth) was thought to be too small to sustain or even form a substantial ring system. Yet, there it was. Then came the advent of long range q-filament EM spectral sensing. The first high resolution image of Ariel's night side proved that Ariel is more like Earth than anyone dared to dream. And perhaps some of the unresolved mysteries of Ariel, are not all natural ones. I haven't done a space scene for a while and I felt that now was a good time. Believe it or not, for me nothing inspires a feeling of Christmas more than the image of colourful planetary orbs floating in the infinity of the cosmos. Enjoy! And thank you for taking a look. Special thanks to Wolfie at http://www.wolfiesden.com/ for the Moon/Planet prop.

Awesome image and write up, I had trouble following where the science ended and the fiction began. I was like "Why I didn't hear about this yet..." Awesome work on the planet and lighting.
