Description

It is a warm place. It is alive with the throb of experimental, industrial noise. By local reckoning, this intriguing, alien din is known, simply, as music. It is easy to grow accustomed to it, to catch a wave of giddy energy as the DJ spins his aural web. You hear snips and pieces of dialogue from the Classic Star Trek, as well as sound effects from a number of other science fictional movies and tv shows…forgotten ones, mostly. It is fitting, however, to hear such sounds in a room where one whole wall is nothing but the lit innards of dead computers. It is an even more intriguing place when empty--before the inevitable crowds arrive. The walls are art. The walls are light. The walls are where all good computers go when they die; I’m sure of that. As I stand before that wall...the Computer Wall, as I call it, I can imagine myself in a number of places, all as interesting as the Cross Club itself. In a mundane frame of mind, I am simply at the Cross Club. But when my thoughts gnaw at plot problems, or the development of fictional characters, I can easily transport myself into one of the “listening rooms” on board a Nemaean starship bound for some obscure region of deepest interstellar space. I can hear people speaking Czech, and I can imagine that it is the sound of High Nemaean, or even the more glottal Nemaean Common. The Cross Club is like that, however; you’re never where you think you are, when you walk into its diminutive door and loose yourself in the maze of rooms and corridors like the innards of some vast, convoluted machine. The Cross Club is one of my two favorite bars in Prague. It is a place to see…a place to experience, just watch out for the really nice Czech guy who buys shots of vodka for you simply because he think‘s you‘re interesting. He doesn’t stop with just one shot, two, or five…and at some point during his generosity you realize that either his English just improved, radically or that you speak fluent Czech. If you meet this guy, you aren’t leaving the bar until 5:00 am, but that’s okay…by that time, the metro has re-opened and you won’t have to endure the convoluted route that the night-trams always take, when all you want to do is return home and SLEEP! ***** As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and hopefully you enjoy this image.

An intriguing photo, Chip. I can almost hear the noises and voices you write about - and that means something ;-) I really love the green-bluish color scheme.

This is superb...I've never seen anything like it...what a great conversation piece...I would love to see this in person...I can almost hear the sci fi sounds coming from it, watch as the lights dance across the wall, so intriguing, I just think this is amazing and thank you for the background on it...

Chip, I don't think you could've gotten the vibe and the feel and the pulse of this place any better. And the way you write about it, especially the man who buys you the vodka, well, I'm almost transported!! Fantastic!!!

You do quite well here, friend. I imagined you in another city now; perhaps you are. The text is worthy in its own right, painting an image for my mind to see. Thanks for this amazing bit of life. I can only imagaine the crowd of people there and that is nice thinking and imagination.

A wonderful image! I love the colors here, and for some reason the green reminds me of The Matrix...
