Description

Sorry for the less than descriptive title...I've no idea what aircraft this actually is. Perhaps the docent said, but I missed it or something. So if anybody knows, I'd love to as well (though I probably won't change the title. lol) One thing I did find interesting though. The docent that gave us the night tour of the flight deck was a bit disgusted that the plane was up there in the first place. His opinion (and I think I agree with him) was that placing a plane up there where it's always exposed to the elements is just a bit insane (not his words, but you could read between the lines) I guess it's there officially to draw in the tourists. Never mind that the Hornet is docked where about the only way you're ever going to see the plane is if you're on the way there already, and if that's where you're headed, just seeing a giant carrier would be enough to prove you're where you're supposed to be. (that's not reading between his lines) So anyway. Hectic weekend...caught up on e-bots, didn't get any renders done, so here's a photo. :D Maybe I'll finish one off later this week. Thanks for looking and commenting if you so choose. John

Nice piece of history there, I can see why the tourguide was irritated at it being exposed to the elements- it would be like having a pristine 57 chevy out in the rain and snow all the time with no garage! A nice crisp tack sharp photo of this!

Aww a big freaking aircraft carrier is boring, but one with a two engine turboprop on the deck, well now we're in business!!!! (note: I don't actually know if that's a turboprop)

I have to agree, it's somewhat strange to have the aircraft outside all the time... Very good shot nonetheless and, well you wouldn't had a chance to take it were it inside...

http://home.planet.nl/~roden171/ for info on the aircraft. Yes, rather sad to let it exposed all the time, unless it's taken in and refurbished from time to time. I suppose they want people to get a feel for the size of the flight deck with a 'live' AC on display. Going to have a little trouble flying with its wings folded though.

I figured it had something to do with ships, being an ex sailor and all. Nice

Nice shot, John, certainly a Grumman but not quite sure of the variant as quite a few of them sport a large radome as they normally provide an early warning radar for the carrier. The U.K. could have done with a few in the Falklands but the politicians had scrapped the big carriers which could have avoided a lot of unnecessery casualties on both sides. You did not say which ship she was on, I'd be curious to know?

Another clear shot with some interesting commentary. Do they always fold the wings that way?
