Description

This is the (in)famous Forth Rail Bridge over the Firth of Forth just north of Edinburgh. I was up in St Andrews visiting friends and stopped off in Queensferry a nice little scottish town which is in between the two Forth Bridges (the other is a newer suspension bridge and is the road bridge). Anyway - this bridge requires constant re-painting, and it all has to do with the salt water in the estuary i am led to beleive. Firstly the salt water (and general climate up there) makes for a very difficult paint durability, so it needs constant re-application (they get to one end of the bridge and have to start again - i have NEVER seen the bridge without scaffolding on it). But it needs to be done to protect the metal beneath it, because of, again, the sea salt being more corrosive than freshwater. So anyway - that is a little tidbit on the Forth Rail Bridge... you go over this bridge on the train going north from Edinburgh - so i know it both from seeing it from the road and actually being on it each time i travelled up to st andrews by train. Taken from the pebble beach just outside queensferry in the freezing cold this morning. There was ice on the road - so it cant have been much above 0! =S Thanks for taking a look. Enjoy! Rich

Very beautyfull image! Maybe a longer exposure would have rendered the motion of the water more nicely?

I love the POV of this, Rich. A longer exposure might have been interesting, but you'd lose some of the sharpness in other areas to get more water blur. And I really like the sharpness you captured.

What a fabulous shot the golden tones of this majestic Cantilever bridge, would be great on it's own, but with the POV and the white water has made this a real keeper!

NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR NOT FAIR!!! I so wanted to get a shot of this bridge when I was up in Scotland but just didn't have time!!! I didn't even have time to go to St Andrews :( I've heard about the scaffolding issue and read that there is a number that photographers can phone to see when it won't have scaffolding around it. Amazing isn't it?! Thanx for the shot Rich!

Most large bridges require constant painting, etc. Job security. This is a very good shot. Only thing better would be a train crossing it.
