Description

**best viewed zoomed** I am staying at the Golden Sickle, a hostel in Prague. They're known for their vivacious Australian bearded dragons. Only now, the dragons are on holiday...well...actually they're inordinately busy hibernating. Their swanky residence is actually occupied by a rather bulky monitor lizard from the grasslands of Africa. He's a fat and perpetually drowsy critter, also a bit on the overweight side. Well...maybe not overweight, but definitely fat and lumpy. I think the lumps you feel along his flanks are the small critters he's eaten and is digesting VERY SLOWLY. He seems to do everything slowly! It's amazing to watch him as well...he doesn't do much of anything, and it's a busy day for him if he moves his head. He has the most fascinating scales. They're HARD and abrasive. If you get close enough, you can actually see strange crenelated patterns defining the edges of some of his scales, while others are oddly layered. In short, he's a fascinating critter when seen up close, and he lets you get as close as you can stand, simply because he can't be bothered to care. Hopefully you enjoy this intimate view of Golden Sickle's fatter, largely motionless mascot, and as always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting on this an my previous images.

Very good close up of this interesting animal. Why do I feel like him? Fat, drowsy, slow...

Interesting portion of the aforesaid animal. A busy day for him is he moves his head? I like that description! The study of metabolism is a Neamean fascination isn't it Chip? Otherwise how would they tolerate many light years in their ship-skins?

I love lizards and have had many as pets in the past...I don't have any right now, my only pets are 2 very beautiful, sweet loving hooded rats....as much as I love lizards I don't think I'd have the nerve to get as close as you did with something this big...LOL...I love the scales though...they have an interesting formation...do these lizards shed their skin like a snake? I'd be interested in seeing the head of this big guy....but only in a photo...LOL....a great capture Chip!

He is indeed fascinating - as if he is creature from another planet frozen in time. It would be fun to feel those scales, but a little scary to be that close. I imagine he can move quite fast when motivated. Great shot. CC

I recognized the skin texture and muscles right away. We had 2 very large ones for a couple of years. Unfortunately we lost the male a couple of weeks ago but they have a distinctive look about them. Excellent texture possible only through good lighting and good photography.

I love your line about him being busy if he moves his head!!! It's that kind of writing that takes your work to another level. Besides being a great foto, you give us these truly inspired descriptions of what you've done - fantastic!!!

A wonderful shot, and I like your pov. He does look scaley. I haven't ever seen one of these up close, and I don't know if I'd be so brave as to actually touch it! You never know though!
