Description
Fort Nelson was built in the 1860s, as part of a chain of fortifications protecting the great naval harbour of Portsmouth in Hampshire and its Royal Dockyard from a feared French invasion.
Covering nearly 19 acres and now fully restored, Fort Nelson sits majestically atop Portdsown Hill, with amazing views of the Solent and the Meon Valley. The Fort stands today as a monument to the skills and ingenuity of Victorian engineering and architecture.
Opened in 1995 as home to the Royal Armouries collection of artillery, Fort Nelson has over 350 big guns and historic cannon on display, all part of the National Museum of Arms and Armour. From the Great Turkish Bombard of 1464, that once protected the Dardanelles to Saddam Husseins infamous a Supergun and covering every period of history from every corner of the world.

It is a fascinating series giving me a look into a place which is a bit remote from me at the moment. You are showing a very competent skill at using angles, lenses and compositions.

Splendid angle for this capture. It is a superb shot in this light. They fire a cannon at noon every Sunday In the Hotel Gardens of the Victoria Hotel in Bay!!! Slightly smaller than the one pictured here!! Have a wonderful day, dear David. Hugs. Di. xx

The craftsmanship on this cannon is so detailed and intricate and even can I say, beautiful - Strange how it would have been lovingly created in order to be used as a weapon of vast devastation!!!! - as always your photography is superb! - hugs Jane xx

How could a beautiful work of art like this be used to blow people to bits? The intricate carving/moulding or whatever is absolutely beautiful, even down to faces on the hubs, spiked wheels to give traction. This really is a work of art, the gunsmith that made this was a master craftsman no doubt about it. Excellent capture David, and a fav for me. Bravo!!!!!
