Description
Fort Nelson was built in the 1860s, as part of a chain of fortifications protecting the great naval harbour of Portsmouth in Hampshire and its Royal Dockyard from a feared French invasion.
Covering nearly 19 acres and now fully restored, Fort Nelson sits majestically atop Portdsown Hill, with amazing views of the Solent and the Meon Valley. The Fort stands today as a monument to the skills and ingenuity of Victorian engineering and architecture.
Opened in 1995 as home to the Royal Armouries collection of artillery, Fort Nelson has over 350 big guns and historic cannon on display, all part of the National Museum of Arms and Armour. From the Great Turkish Bombard of 1464, that once protected the Dardanelles to Saddam Husseins infamous a Supergun and covering every period of history from every corner of the world.

Wonderful camera angle again catching the ceiling and the floor! A wonderful shot. Would have loved to stand here and watch when it was a working smithy. Got to get the dreaded ironing done now. Phew!!.. Would rather shoe a horse!! Either would be warmer than up here in this room. Have a great day. Hugs. Di. xx

Looks a tad clean for a smithy, they should have had a chimney sweep do the decorating.lol. Excellent capture David, this is the tidiest cleanest smithy I have ever seen, they get everything the can as authentic as possible and then whitewash the smithy. It's certainly brought a smile to my face mate. Everything you've done is spot on and you cannot be blamed for the decor. Greta work and series. Bravo!!!!!
