I had a good cat. I'd tell her, stay away from the Christmas tree while I am decorating (cause she kept getting under foot, nearly tripping me). So, what did she do, she went and sat on her pillow nearby and watched me. As soon as I was done, watch out tree, here she came! It was all I could do to keep her from knocking it over as she tried to scoot up it. We finally had a truce and she got to play with the ornaments, so long as she did not break them or push the tree over. Worked out pretty well from there on.

My nephew Jerry's cat has her own row of red ornaments on the bottom of the tree, she drags them off and bats them around. She always puts them back underneath and won't touch them again until he re-hangs them. Cats add so much joy to life I can't wait to live where I can have one.
