Description

This image just sprang from an experiment in using the replicate tool in Vue. I painted on the ecosystem, in the foreground (left and right). The trees come from the Realms Art Forest Plants Pack, an excellent value for money collection in my opinion. which is available at Cornucopia 3D. The ecosystem and other materials are all standard Vue ones. The gorgeous sky is Copenhagen V2 , though I can’t remember who made this atmosphere. That’s about it really, so how about a story (written after the image was completed): Once mankind reached for the stars, it became abundantly clear that the Milky Way was in fact teeming with life. Not surprisingly, much of it was totally alien and incomprehensible to our sensibilities, but occasionally cultures were found which struck a chord with us. One such culture was discovered on Gliese 581d. This planet, a little over 20 light years from Earth, was found to be comprised of 16 enormous islands in a super-saline sea. Fifteen of these islands were inhabited by a race of basically humanoid, sentient lifeforms, almost as advanced as ourselves. The first ship to reach Gliese 581d and to make contact with the gentle Glieseans reported an immediate bond with them; a degree of understanding and comfort that went beyond the intellectual. One of the first places they took those human emissaries to was to this place you see here: a sacred site on the uninhabited 16th island. The Glieseans call it Tamora and it translates loosely to the Fifteen Pillars of the Universe. Despite the separation of the islands across this vast planet, the individual societies that developed have barely diverged and Tamora is a testament to this. At least 2,000 years ago, many hundreds of artisans from each of the 15 inhabited islands were invited to design and build a stone pillar to represent the part that their society plays in holding up the universe in which they all live – a team-effort if you like. The pillars were all carved straight from a quarry on the 16th island so that, even though each pillar may look different, they are all made of the same material. This is an important tenet by which the Glieseans live by. Each pillar is exactly the same height above the surrounding countryside – this way, each of the 15 individual societies all play their part in upholding the Universe in which they live. No one society is more important than another. Quite how they raised each 300m long stone sculpture up into a vertical position has yet to be determined, but it does speak of an extraordinary reverence. Such reverence also explains the purpose of this site – it is a place of pilgrimage for the Glieseans. Within the first few days of the birth of a child, the parents will travel vast distances across the sea and land to reach Tamora. They will then walk across the narrow footbridge you see in the foreground, across the lake to the place of the Sun. The child is then held up under the Sun to see the 15 pillars which hold up the Universe, thus the Glieseans believe, to instil the new born with a sense of responsibility and connection to their world. Looking upon this scene, it is not hard to understand the ‘spirit of place’ that the Glieseans must feel each time they visit Tamora and show their children the majesty of the Universe. Modelled and constructed by myself in Vue 6 Infinite - no postwork (except the signature of course!) I hope you enjoy this image and perhaps the accompanying story as well. Your comments are always appreciated.
