Description
The man who arrives here with his pack-animals in his mountain village is a "Saeumer".
This is, here in the Alps an old occupation since hundreds of years.
These Peoples were rough fellows which transported goods over the Alps with their Horses and Donkeys on narrow paths, daily under danger of avalanches and rockfalls.
They transported salt, wine and cheese, fur, glass goods from Venice, spices, drapery, velvet and silk from Flanders and Bergamo, but also gold and silver from the mines in the Alps.
Many words in the German language have her origin from this job.
Their horses were special breedings for use in high mountains.
Bad times started for the Saeumer with railway construction through the Alps.
They started to supply remote villages with goods, or been active as a smuggler.
On alpine huts, stories are still told about wild events of Saeumers and alpine customs officers.
Times have changed. Now the Sauemer walk with tourists on her secret ways and smuggler's paths through the Alps.
The horses transport no more goods, but the baggage of the tourists.
However, believe me, it is still an experience to walk with these fellows and their horses....
