Description

morning all :o) managed to get out a take a few pics yesterday even though it was dull and miserable . the transporter bridge is the furthest downstream bridge across the river tees it connects middlesbrough on the south bank to port clarence on the north bank. it is a travelling gondola suspended from the bridge,it can get you across the river in 90 seconds. the car can carry 200 people, 9 cars or 6 cars and one minibus. the bridge was built in 1911 . many of the world's greatest bridges including the nearby newport bridge about a mile downstream, the tyne bridge and the famous sydney harbour bridge were designed and constructed from steel produced at dorman long. the transporter Bridge is 850 feet (260 metres) long and 225 feet (69 metres) high at the tallest point and is the largest working bridge of its kind in the world. The distance between the two towers is 580 feet (177 metres). the bridge has featured in films and tv programmes including billy elliot, auf wiedersehen pet, the fast show, spender and steel river blues.the fireworks celebration for the millenium in 2000 were fired from the lenghth of the bridge in the storyline of auf wiedersehen pet the bridge was dismantled to be sold to and re-erected in the usa. a public outcry ensued from people who believed that the bridge was really being pulled down. the bbc were required to put a disclaimer on the end of the last episode of the series stating that the bridge was still in middlesbrough lol :o).. have a great day my friends ,thanks for looking in and for your most welcome comments :o) some of the information came from online sources for accuracy :o) mick

Really interesting!! I saw this bridge in a prog on channel 5 about structural engineering, but the shots weren't as nice as yours,it was mainly about how it worked.

Well you knew I was going to love this one Mick, straight to my favs. I don't know yet when I will be coming up to take my daughter across it, but when I do I will let you know. Fantastic shot, with great detail, just one tiny point of CC, if you had backed off another two feet and angled the camera more you might well have captured the whole bridge. Still is an awesome shot of an awesome transporter bridge, and one of such fame. Bravo!!!!! Happy New Year!!!!!!

Great shot on this bridge Mick. My Dad is fine but still in the hospital due to some setbacks often related to the procedure that he had done. But things are looking very good. Now, I have some done with a nasty cold... Thanks for your thoughtfulness my friend.
