Although I respect & admire a lot of what Thomas Paine had to say (particularly about religion), I think he was off the mark on this one. I prefer Gandhi's "There is no path to peace. Peace is the path." While all people have the right to defend themselves when attacked, the idea that war (& particularly preemptive wars) can lead to peace is one that thousands of years of history has proven to be false...
