Description

4th shot in a series taken last Saturday at the old haunted Victorian mansion on Vance Avenue (sometimes known as the old Busby mansion) here in Memphis, Tennessee. After years of neglect (with a few exceptions) the new owners have finally made a commitment to save the estate from eventual ruin. While they are doing mostly weekend restoration work, the house remains uninhabited and for the most part is completely empty. Last Saturday the new owners were kind enough to allow Leah Lil Sizzler and I free rein of the estate to photograph its barren emptiness at will. It was an incredible photography opportunity, and if you are appreciative of such a thing you should check out her posts as well. The history of this old haunted mansion would be an extensive project all in itself. Among other things, it was used as a morgue in the 1870's as the yellow fever epidemic ran rampant and all but completely wiped out Memphis. In this shot I am descending from the 3rd floor approaching the upper level of the 2nd floor, which uniquely has two levels with a few steps of the staircase in between. The checkerboard tile from down on the first floor can be seen as well. The previous post in the series, "Old Windows" contains links to the previous posts. Thanks for viewing! marshall

Wow. What a great POV. And have I mentioned how much I love the light in there? More, please!!

Very nice job. I am not sure I am comfortable with the turn of the photo... I think I prefer it turned "sideways." That is only my opinion and it could be that I do not think as creatively as you.

MrsLubner - I debated a while whether I should turn it sideways or not, but as I stood on the stairway I shot it as it is, a vertical shot leaning forward looking down to the first floor. Turning the picture around gives the viewer a more solid anchor with a discernable horizon, but that wasn’t what I was seeing at the time. Walking on some of the turns on that stairway can almost give you vertigo! That’s how I felt when I took it, and leaving it a vertical picture as it was shot captures (for me) that same feeling. Thanks much for your input! marshall

Turning it sideways is the more conventional view and gives it a completely different look and feel to the pic. But I prefer this view; it has a dizzying effect and gives the viewer the feeling they are about to go tumbling down those steps. What can I say I'm odd like that. :)
