Description

I'm not entirely sure how long, but it is AT LEAST 8 years since i bought the pair of timberlands that the one on the left comes from. The one on the right has been worn for one day (today actually, and yes with the other new one to make a pair) and was a christmas pressie from my parents who obviously thought my old pair were a bit too tatty, and i think they are right. Anyway - i just thought it was amazing that they are the same model, and the same size. This is what a Timberland shoe looks like after a lot of wear and tear. They have been with me around the world, i have walked on beaches, got them wet many a time (salt and fresh), walked up Waynu Picchu in Peru in them, used them as a work shoe behind a bar (and that gets messy with all the beer slopping around) and i used to play golf in them as well - so a lot of mileage. So yeah a battered shoe, and an inadvertant advert for timberlands, because although these are expensive shoes, you seriously get what you pay for. I will continue wearing the old pair, as their only fault is that they are now a bit too old to pass as a "smart" shoe. A tidbit of info - those scratches on the side of the old shoe are a relatively new addition, i only realised they were there a few days after the event, and that was taking this shot. I needed to be low to the ground, to see what i was taking on my monopod in it's "macro-height tripod" mode. Thing is the ground was freezing cold sea coming in between a rocky beach so i sat down on my foot resting on a rock in some weird contortion. Thus the outside of my foot was scraping the leather across the rock i was sat on... hence the scratches. Battle scars! :) This shot is to commemorate 8 (and probably more) years of a good shoe. Enjoy! Rich

Well, parents spend money to bronze a baby's first shoe, even if they wore it when they couldn't walk yet, and they plant it right there on the shelf as some trophey. A shoe like this has more meaning in it than a silly shoe never walked in so I say... send it off and have it bronzed. :-) Really great shot and you are a wonderful storyteller.

I'm lucky if I get 2-3 years out of a pair of shoes. 8 years??...I'll pass your name along to these "Timberland" people so you can collect your adverting photography commission out of the cost of a pair of size 13's. Great image mate.

Mine was an old chair..when our new flooring was put in, my wife decided instead of taking the chair to the dump she would dismaltle it..with a mini-sledge hammer and prybar. She did it. I like the shoes. Mine..well, no tales to tell.

This is a great story and gives the object character and a sense of history. We forget that sometimes about the things that we own.

Very nicely accomplished. Very professional. New shoes are nice, but the old ones are just getting "broken in" well and are at their most comfortable now. :)

"If i could walk a mile in your shoes"... that's the first thing that popped into my head on seeing this...lots of memories in the old pair, glad you're still planning on wearing them.

many years ago timberland had an advertisement like this - some good shoepolish will do the trick to make them look good again :-) don't throw old shoes out, even if you have new ones.

Well there's definitely a lot of miles walked on those soles and, despite their rugged appearance, I do think that the old shoe looks so much better - more comfortable and lived-in!! And having worked behind bars (the drinks kind!!) on and off for years, I know just how sticky and messy it can get and shoes can quite quickly become less than attractive to the nose there too! A great idea to do this comparison shot. Hugs Chrissy xx
