Took a hike at Rosario Beach and came upon this: This is a fabulous sculpture that depicts & honors the abundance of life the Native Americans harvested from the sea... "The Maiden of Deception Pass" The Coast Salish people studied the sea carefully so they could travel safely, eat well and avoid disasters. They learned how to eat nearly everything that is in the sea, and how to gather each kind of fish and shellfish when it was the most abundant. They dried & stored fish, clams, and camas and traded food, baskets & blankets with villages far up the rivers and even across the Cascade Mountains to Eastern Washington. Coast Salish people appreciated the power and gifts of the sea, and their survival depended on the knowledge and respect of it!
