I have definitely mentioned this before: DONT LIGHT FROM THE FRONT. It completely flattens everything in the photo - and thus for this style of image is completely unflattering to her form (not to mention puts a big white patch on the cupboard underneath her arm where it is reflecting straight back at the camera). Light from the side if anything or just use ambient light you will get a better photo out of it. Pose-wise this is actually one of your better photos, i would have kept her like that and tried to find a cleaner background (ie one colour rather than a pattern - white wall for instance) and put a light up and to the right of her and maybe one to the left somewhere as a fill. Use a desk lamp if you want or find a window; on-board flash is an unforgivable sin imo when used as the primary light source in portraiture - you dont need a studio to pull off a "stuido" shot, just some lighting imagination with household items... Hope that offers some critical advice you can carry on into the year :)
