Description

This is a view from The Lizard the most southerly point in mainland Great Britain The name is derived from the Cornish words lis" meaning "place" and "ard" meaning "high". The view is of Polpeor Cove with the now abandoned lifeboat station which was closed in 1961.. Rescue work was always dangerous here from the stormy seas on this magestic coastline looking out towards Kynance cove, with one third of the worlds shipping passing by they have been kept busy.. In 1907 the 524 passengers and crew crowded on board the stricken SS Suevic did not yet know it but the largest - and perhaps the greatest - forgotten rescue in the 183-year history of the RNLI had begun. During the ensuing 16 hours, the 60 crewmen of four wooden lifeboats stationed around the Lizard made multiple journeys in dense fog and towering seas to bring to safety 456 men, women and children on board the stricken liner. Incredibly, not a single life was lost. 1914 A new boathouse was built at Polpeor Cove for the station’s first motor lifeboat. The date still proudly emblazoned on the front of the building..
