Description

Sorry, sifting through old photos again while it is so miserable and grey outside. From Hest Bank across Morcambe Bay 8 miles to Grange-over-sands. 200 people including children and at least one dog that we saw. It is imperative to be led by one or more of the local guides. There are sections of sinking sand and dangerous tides and strong currents across the estuaries. Sadly it is now notorious for the shocking deaths of the chinese cockle pickers who became trapped by the fast incoming tide. The trip is mainly across flat sand and the other side never seems to get any nearer. However there are two sections of water to cross and if the current is not so stong as on this occassion we were able to wade through waist high. Caterpillar tracked vehicles meet half way where the main body of water is and take the children plus anyone else across safely. Thanks for all comments, have a good weekend.

Somehow I don't think I could get across before the tide came in Alan, I knew about the walk but didn't know it was eight miles across. You're a braver man than I Gunga Din. Excellent capture. Bravo!!!!!

Wow - eight miles across that sort of ground is quite a trek, even if it IS flat! Don't apologise for going through your old photos during the winter ... you're certainly not the only one! It's gray here, too. This is a great shot!

A fascinating image, Alan! I love seeing other peoples beaches. I suppose the horrible event had added a certain frisson to this walk.

An interesting picture and very interesting background info Alan. I guess it is similar to what they call in Germany 'Wattenmeer". I was near Cuxhaven once as a teenager and we were warned about the some dangers you mention in this picture, Sig...
