Description

This is another view of Oberammergau from the cable car but from a lower viewpoint. Just as in the previous upload, the picture was taken through an open sliding window. I felt it was save since I was the only passenger in this car and there was no surveillance camera. On the left is the Catholic church St. Peter and Paul built in the mid-18th century. At center right is the Passionspielhaus. It is there were the villagers reenact the life and death of Jesus. This play originated during the 30-year war when in 1632 the region was ravaged by the Bubonic Plague. The village lost one adult to this disease in October 1632 which increased to 20 adults in March 1633. The villagers pledged that if they were spared they would perform a play every ten years depicting the life and death of Jesus. The death rate declined to one in July 1633. The villagers believed they were spared after they kept their part of the vow when the play was performed in 1634. The play has been performed with very few interruptions ever since. It is performed every ten years for a five months period. In modern times the play involves 2,000 participants including performers, musicians, and stage technicians, all of them residents of the village. The male performers begin to grow their beards usually about two years before the year the event takes place. This picture was taken on 2 January 2008. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my previous upload.

This is just gorgeous, Sig. Such a breathtaking view, and I really like the historical information, too. I'm so glad you didn't fall out of the car. You should be ashamed of yourself for riding with the door open. LOL
