It makes you wonder if there was ever a time when the arches were not filled. Did someone propose the arches to match Roman forms and then decide the local stones were too rough hewn and small to work alone?. Or was it a Crusader returned from Jerusalem that had seen just this thing as the stones became smaller and rougher as temples were destroyed and rebuilt from the same stones on the spot.
