Description
I'm approaching 50
she's 19, i suppose,
no-one knows,
we both survived
cancer
last year
and here i am
having a stroll in the park
with her
I have to guide her gently,
she's blind
and hasn't heard my voice
for over a year now
but the pace is alright
as slow as our disease,
at some points
decelerating as
a Sigur Ros track
she looks happy enough though
she smells the decaying leaves
kicks them into the thin cold air
an act of bold, stubborn defiance
cheating death for one more day
at least
I took her from the shelter
unable to terminate her life
having lost myself
in her warm brown eyes
it's been seven years now
how about that, Missy
remember the kittens
i brought home
loving them so much
you started producing milk
gosh, how they purred
drinking from your breasts
remember the abandoned
dogs with litters
we took care of
within a day you were
accepted as an aunt
as a perfect second
mother
well, those days are gone
it's just the two of us now
here
in this park
taking
our
time
to get home

this one is for you Bob, even though i am in an almost total, self imposed incommunicado at the moment, your little mails always made my day, gave me some extra power, thank you my friend!

I never know what to say when I read your work. You leave me with too much to say, and nothing at all. This is wonderful. I suppose that will have to suffice.

(((Dirk))) It's beyond all things wonderful...just to find you here again. Sheer tenderness here..pen-painting of the most beautiful and vivid visions of you both...of perfectly unspoken understandings, moments now, times past, a thousand or more sweet and cherished memories along the way, shared conquests, immeasurable love, and yes, a certain shared defiance (which, of course, brought one of those Cheshire cat kinds of grins from here). Wonderful writing that stands solidly, beautifully, and in proof that someone hasn't lost his touch. And, of course, a wonderful offering and dedi for Bob :) (and, I take it, she's the precious little grey moppet?)

I am so glad to see a post from you. Take time to heal my friend, and I will take equal time to let all your works inspire me ... as they always have.

Your words prove what a very kind and loving soul you are. I love how you talk with such warmth about your dog. She sounds also as though she is such a docile and caring dog and I love the picture you have uploaded of her with the pups. I know just how powerful the love between us with our pets can be, I have 4 of my own and they make me get up in the mornings, and make me smile when otherwise I wouldn't have done, giving their love to me and not expecting anything in return except a warm hug, a kind word and some food to keep them going, and trusting that I will keep them safe. Take good care of yourselves Dirk and Missy I am thinking of you - hugs Jane xx

Strength to you and Missy, Dirk. Many of us have been snatched from that pitch black place. We echo your sweet words and hopes for the future. Your generosity of spirit shines. Thankyou Bob.

Tears are in my eyes, as I look at my own beloved Gracie Anne, getting on in years, fighting her own demons. There is comfort in the bonding of human and canine.
