Description

"I've got my eye on you." ~~~~~

Not a true oculus, rather the architecture leading to one, or rather to very large skylight windows at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. It rather reminded me of a cat's eye. I felt black and white suited the subject matter. Aside from B&W conversion, levels adjustment, resizing and the addition of the border, there were no other manipulations. Best viewed at Full Size. Further reading from the web for those of you interested: Oculus (plural = oculi) is the Latin word for eye, and the word remains in use in certain contexts, as the name of the round opening in the top of the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, and in reference to other round windows and openings. The Oculus in the Pantheon has always been open to the weather, allowing rain to enter and fall to the floor, whence it is carried away through drains. The bright opening and the surrounding smooth concrete above the coffering resembles an eye, giving the opening its name. Since the revival of dome construction beginning in the Italian Renaissance, open oculi have been replaced by light-transmitting cupolas. Circular windows, a feature of Classical architecture since the sixteenth century are often denoted by their French name, oeil de boeuf, or "bull's-eye". Such circular or oval windows express the presence of a mezzanine on a building's facade without competing for attention with the major fenestration. Circular windows set in dormers have been a feature of French Classical architecture since the beginning of the seventeenth century. For structural reasons, they are also found as the portholes of ships. In archaeology, oculus is the name given a motif found in western European prehistoric art. It consists of a pair of circular or spiral marks, often interpreted as eyes, and appears on pottery, statues and megaliths. It may represent the watchful gaze of a god or goddess (the dolmen deity for example) and was especially common during the Neolithic period. While oculus is not in common use in English, words derived from it such as ocular (relating to the eye) are, primarily in medical and optical fields. Also, the terms Oculus Dexter (right eye), Oculus Sinister (left eye), and Oculus Uterque (both eyes) are used in medicine, usually abbreviated OD, OS, and OU, respectively. -----

What a fabulous image! I love this. I'm putting in a vote to see this in LWITG next Monday morning! I'm quite sure there won't be many shots I like better than this all week. (Fred? Danny? Are you listening?) :)

I see it, I see it! More evident in the thumbnail, but you have great imagination! I still think we need a "What do you see in the cloud?" contest...

I love the angle of this shot, and the subtle gradations from light to dark, all limited to the black and white range; this is a compelling, wonderfully captured image. Fantastic work, and a great introduction to your gallery.

Outstanding composition. I did not know about an Orange County in Florida. We have an Orange County here in California though. And I've been that that convention center... :-) No matter, this is a very well done shot and it has several layers that make it what you see and all are nice and defined.

Excellent POV, clarity, lighting and geometry depicted in this cool capture, Kort! Plus highly informative narrative on the vernacular vis-a-vis the eye(s). Incidentally, speaking of eye/ocular, did you hear of the optician who fell into his equipment and made a spectacle of himself? And think of the dichotomy unleashed when Mr and Mrs Dexter name their first-born, "Sinister."

I have learnt something, as I didn't know what an oculus was. A very dramatic looking shot.
