Description

A little hike along one of the pit craters called Keanakako'i Crater. If you stayed on the trail, you would probably have missed these tree molds. Tree molds are formed when lava surrounds a tree, chills against it, and then drains away. The standing structure left behind is often called a lava tree. Here is a family of lava trees. Aloha and thank you for viewing

Errol, so glad to see you again! I was wondering when you'd be back. I love these lava trees. Are they solid in the center or do they actually make molds of the trees on the inside like the volcanic ash in Pompeii?

PJ. Some of the lava trees that had fallen shows a hollow inside. Some of these structures stands about 15 ft or more in height indicating how high the lava flow was. Thanks for asking... Aloha

Fascinating stuff, Errol. We have the inverse here, holes in the lava flow where the trees were, called lava casts. Good to see you posting again.

Excellent shot. This one leaves me in awe that the lava climbed to those heights. Think about it...It was probably higher, that's where it cooled off at!!! Great work and Aloha.

Super shot, most informative, and kind of spooky. Never knew anything like this even existed. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, Horatio.
