Description

Thank you for your comments on my also very white posting. This is the city of Oudewater. The building on the left is called Heksenwaag.. which means something like 'place were witches are to be measured'. In fact from the 16th till the 18th Century the building was used for this purpose. The weight of the women discovered their ideentity. 'To light' meant this could be a witch. To be very sure on this point lots of women were bound after they had been measured. Than they had to be thrown in the water in front of the building. When they drawned it was clear that they were no witch.. but when they floated on the water it was very clear they had to be a witch. No need to say what the result of this treatment usually was. thumb_1603636.jpgAlso very white

We have the same tradition, the 'Ducking Stool'. Victoria Beckham would be unlucky if we still did it!

A sad place to be sure. The test for a witch varied in different places but the drowning test was pretty standard.

Very beautiful architecture and fascinating history. Looks like there were witch hunts all over the world during that period of history. Nicely done and thanks for the narrative.
