Description

Please forgive me for posting something with a holiday theme this late in the year! This is about the light and the reflections more than it is about the tree. When I took this shot (along with several more that were much like it!) I had no idea what I'd gotten. Every angle I shot this from produced a slightly different result. This grand piano is actually black laquer. The flat, white, winter light we have here, at the precise angle from which I shot this, gave the piano a chrome/hematite look that I just couldn't believe when I saw it! While I admit to some postwork (I took out a bright red santa hat that was sitting on the piano) I didn't do anything to make the black surface look silver. It really is just the angle of the light. This is another photograph taken at my brother's house. If you want to see how distorted the reflections are, you can check out a photo I took of the brass lamp for comparison. And yes, this is the same piano I was crawling around under! If you missed that charming image, you can see it here. By the way - the surface of the piano is perfectly smooth. That weirdness in the middle of the tree isn't a flaw in the laquer, it's just another version of one of the reflections. Full view might be fun! :)

i watched on tv one time how they make the piano so smooth and a depth to it. i think it have 27 layers of laquer on it and sanded between coats with lava power stuff. I love how this came out here

I have NO Idea how or why, but this image reminds me of something from a gorgeous Russian film, by some director like Tarkovsky or some such person. I think it's the fascinating byplay of light and reflection, light and SOMETHING that isn't shadow. I love that unexpectedness. There is brilliance here that's hypnotic, and really well captured. There's also a liquid quality to this image which I happen to love! In short this is great work, definitely a favorite, and yeah...looks like I'm gonna have to follow a link or two and see you UNDER that piano. THAT hint of an adventure sounds a bit like some of the shenanegans I've gotten up to in a certain bar in Prague...usually taking pictures of things like...a crack in the floor. Great work! Fantastic image!

I had to comment on this because I played classical piano many years; and through your capture that swooping wood becomes a huge opulent mirror, turning the body of the beast into a blasting day-glo affair, sweeping across the room like a huge hallucination, both eye-popping & beautiful. (And you know what? As a thumbnail, it could pass for pure abstract design.)
