Description
Right folks, I'm back from wabbit shooting.
What we have here are three A6M's looking for action, probably over the Pacific I suppose.
Badly underestimated by the US early on in the Pacific War, these Zero's were flown by well disciplined, experienced pilots against rookie Americans, causing immense carnage. Later on, when the quality and performance of both aircraft and crew was improved, the balance swung the other way.
The big problem with the Jap airforce was that they didn't progress with design improvement much and, running out of good pilots, they tried to fight it out using outdated equipment. Finally in desperation, these poor guys were forced into being Kamikazes, this being the only way they could inflict really serious damage.
I read about one guy who was so p....d off about being ordered to go out and die that he strafed the commanding officer's office before leaving. Brilliant!
Bryce 6, Max9. CS3 for post.

I hadn't heard the story about the guys straffing the commander's office, but I did know a guy who was training to be a Kamikaze pilot. He was 16 years old at the time and if the war had dragged on for another couple of weeks, he wouldn't be here. He and I trained together at the USAF control tower school in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was a Tech-Sergeant in the then brand new Japanese Self-Defense Air Force and was in his mid-thirties. Very nice guy. I still have a Japanese fan that he gave me, framed and hanging on my livingroom wall. Small world, huh?

Nicely done. The different tail numbers is a great touch.

I knew an old sailor who had manned a quad 20mm and shot one of these down receiving multiple wounds from the near explosion. He built the first Model T restroation I ever saw.
