Death is a big part of life, and how to deal with it was once something people discussed freely. We moderns try to pretend it doesn't happen, though it does with great regularity. Your image would have been a sign of hope to people of earlier eras, nothing horrifying or disturbing at all, quite the contrary. Their faith that they would go on after death immunized them in large part from the modern frenzied rush to distract ourselves from the feared inexorably approaching utter dissolution at death that today's western world's state religion of atheism dictates for the good and pious and proper-thinking. Who was the wiser and who was right? We'll never get a definitive report in this flesh. Hence the significance of faith, or its absence. Great image.
