It's not the first image on the board of a newly graduated engineer. It's the sum of a range of designs all with different aspect ratio and sweep. The vertical tail is big enough for an airliner and the tail arm is short enough for a carrier based fighter. Somebody decided that the simplicity of an optimum delta was it's successor. Meanwhile all the weapons testing was complete. The OPEVAL was signed off. It made the trip to the theater. Now it is home.

nicely caught. tallpindo is right about the size of the vertical stab, but the Tornado is challenged in only having one, when so many other combat aircraft have two.
