Mornin' All *S* Ever since I saw a doc many moons ago on bees that stated they see colors we don't, since they can recognize UV light, I've been fascinated by this. In fact, birds and some other animals and insects do too. Who knows what wonderful colors are just beyond our reach. "Ultraviolet light, invisible to us, uncovers colors and patterns which draw them to the source of pollen and nectar - all hidden to humans without special equipment. Although both honey bees and people have a visual system based upon three-colors, the limits of this color sensitivity are very different. People cannot see very far into the Violet or Ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic visual spectrum. We are essentially blind to wavelengths of light below 400 nanometers/millimicrons (light in this regions is called UV-A and UV-B light). These are the powerful light rays which cause us to tan or sunburn. Bees can see these invisible-to-us rays of light! Another interesting difference happens at the opposite end of the visible spectrum. We can easily see the color of a red sweater or red fire engine (at least many of them used to be red!). To a honey bee, however, the color red is invisible. They see red objects as black, or the absence of color. Bees are not colorblind and they can see "secret" colors that we cannot." This is so interesting, thanks a lot for sharing this information. Your image is awesome, I love the way you blended all the colors, there is so much balance and so many details and I really like the eye, to me it gives the feeling of an awareness of all that is happening and a feeling of secret knowledge. Bees were also very respected by some cultures, in England in the old days beekeepers were shamans, also it has been said that accuponcture was drawn from the bees and the way they sting; they are fascinating beings! Great work Mina :)

What a cool thing to be able to see secret colours! I wonderf if it's shared by little ones, they see such interesting things, that seem to be visible only in the corners of our eyes.

Interesting concept...bee vision has always fascinated me, especially since yellow jackets (nasty little buggers) see in the same way. I've gotten close to yellow jacket nests, enough so that I could poke my finger into them...gently of course and I've never been stung. A biologist friend of mine told me that it's possible that my "color signatures" don't indicate fear and they likely "see" my ambient colors NOT spiking into the infrared, as would happen with a frightened animal...thus they PROBABLY thought I was a really UGLY plant. No matter... The image itself is fantastic, it holds your signature touches of brilliance and subtlety, and this is definitely one of my favorites, for many, many reasons.

Excellent artwork dearest Mina ... and interesting topic regarding the limits of human perception. Despite the high metabolic cost, our little brains work overtime to extend our sensory capabilities to attain the capabilities of the other animals. Through various technologies, we've managed to outdo them all. The downside is that while most of nature nature appears to operate in a circular fashion, technology and its concomitant depletion of the environment is linear. Well done dear. HUGS

I have always found bees fascinating although I am quite allergic to the little critters....there are so many interesting facts about them...and this is the "bees knees" Mina...lovely color combinations and shapes! :)
