Description

This street is located in the shopping district of Tsimshatsui in Kowloon. Kowloon which is derived from the Cantonese words kau (nine) and loong (dragon) is part of Kowloon Peninsula. This Peninsula is bordered in the east by the Lei Yue Mun Strait, in the west by Mei Foo Sun Chuen and Stonecutter's Island, by Tate's Cairn and Lion Rock in the north and by Victoria Harbor in the South. Kowloon itself extends from the Tsimshatsui waterfront in the south to Boundary Street in the north. Victoria harbor separates Kowloon from Hongkong Island. Kowloon was part of what was known as the British Crown Colony of Hongkong and was part of the New Territories on the mainland. Tsimshatsui never rests and one can buy just about anything there. I was flagged by an Indian on a sidewalk and coaxed into an Indian taylor shop. I had a double-breasted cashmere suit taylor-made for a very reasonable price, shirt and tie thrown in for the deal. The actual fittings were done by a Chinese taylor. The Indians had taken over the business end of the store. I walked into a jeweller store and inquired about the delicate ivory carvings for sale. The first question the sales clerk asked me was where I was from. After telling him I was from the United States he told that he could not sell me ivory carvings. I guess they were aware of our import restrictions. Other countries are apparently less restrictive. This picture was taken in January 1996, a little more than a year prior to the scheduled turnover of Hongkong by the British Government to the Chinese Goverment. The picture was later scanned. All my visits there always left me with the impressions of what a fire trap the place was. So crowded, no way to get out if things really started to burn. Excellent shot, gives a real sense of the place.
