Description

This is in the parade ground or back of the fire station, showing the tower and the entrance to the engine bays. The three door on the far right are the ones used mainly, the forth door is a service bay, the door visible to the left of the tower is where one of the vintage engines is kept. The more modern of the two previous ones I've posted. This Tower is the main reason for the Grade 2 listed building status. It is one of the finest examples still standing in the UK. It stands at about eighty feet in height, I believe as well as for training purposes it was used to dry out the hoses at one time, they used to hang them from the top to let all the water drain out before rolling up and putting back on the appliances. The roof behind the tower, is a slate roof and if the station was to be brought up to standard would have to be stripped and recovered, using original slates only. No way on earth could that roof be stripped without breaking quite a few slates. The slates are Westmorland Slate and cannot be bought cheap if they can be bought at all. Hence the high price for renovation of this wonderful building. This is the last in the Rochdale Fire Station Series(for now) I hope to go to the next open day when they hold it in March I believe, which is Dennis Day. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make, CC is most welcome. May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are. Glorious sun today but very cold here.

Great capture of the tower! I can't imagine them hauling the hoses all the way up (wet) and then back down (although down would be easier...)!

I can get dizzy just looking at this. The tower is so thin and tall it is amazing. And your capture of the entire length of it is too.

Wonderful shot! You've done very well at showing its great height. I KNEW something was missing, but couldn't figure out what it was until I read Lane's comment. Cute fireman portraits! When you go back for Dennis Day (is he brother to Doris?) maybe you could persuade some of the fellows to pose? Just a suggestion. :) This has been an interesting and informative series, and I've enjoyed it very much, my friend! Excellent presentations.
