Description

Metal Statue working the heavy wooden lock gates. Situated at a small West Yorkshire town SOWERBY BRIDGE, next to HALIFAX UK. My dear friend Sylvia is from Halifax, Yorkshire and I am from over the pennines in Lancashire. We have slightly different dialects and accents and pronounce some words very differently, Sowerby is one of them. I used to pronounce it like the word "Sour bee" but Sylvia gave me grief for the rest of the trip. you must pronounce the place-names like the locals "So erbee", or almost SO-BE I'm still not sure lol. There is a place in the Lake district UK called Ambleside you say Amble-side, my brother was walking through Windermere and an American tourist asked "Hi, is this the way to "Am-Bless-idee" not the guys fault but we found it so funny lol. have a good day! Alan

Great pic! I love your story about accents, all my family are from oop north, Mums side from Leeds, and Grandads side from Rochdale. Mum moved to sunny Bournemouth to have me!

A wonderful capture dear Alan. I understand the difference in accents. I am a Lancashure lass, exiled in North Yorkshire. Still have my Lancashire accent though!!! Hugs for a happy day. Diane.xx

I know you couldn't move it Alan, but you could have washed that dirty car in the background, even canal water is cleaner than that thing. roflmao. Love the capture and the narrative, but then you know how much I like a narrative with a pic. I have passed through Sowerby Bridge I don't know how many times, but have never had a walk round the place. When I was 15 working for Whittles Bakery, we used to stop here every morning five days a week for breakfast, it was my first job from leaving school and I could only afford one toast and a coffee. My driver always had a full breakfast, bacon egg sasauge and tomato with two toast(gready get).lol. No wonder I was skinny. Excellent capture, lovely sculpture. Bravo!!!!!

Splendid capture ;O) The different accents and pronunciations are all around the world, you must hear an Andalusian person that seem to forget all the "S" in their vocabulary or the north Spanish people that seem to speak with a lovely melody, almost singing, it's funny. Where I live (South Spain, now) we are lots of british people and it's a splendid mess seems we all got together, he he he!

Nice capture Alan, and an interesting narrative on the word play. That American was way off, maybe he thought he was in a foreign country and English wasn't spoken there. Its funny how place names sometimes get butchered, Sig....
