Description

In the wake of my successful (if you can call it that) gallery series "I.B.R.O.L." comes a new tale with a similar theme of cultures colliding. I need YOUR INPUT AND ADVICE on both the character designs and the story! The idea is that it's supposed to be a "homage" or "respectful parody" of my old favorite comic, Archie. The problem is that it might be a little TOO much like Archie that lawyers might come knocking! Of course, the American characters are drawn in American style, and the Japanese characters are drawn is vaguely Manga-like style! (This gives a touch of absurdity!) The setting: The town of Hillandale, a place stuck in the 1950's where McCarthyism is the norm and the (unnamed) Comics Code Authority is essentially law. Here we follow the wholesome misadventures of teen-agers (always written as hyphenated in classic old style). Marty: A well meaning young man, very clumsy and always thinking about girls. He gets lots of dates, but he has never touched a girl below the shoulders. (His name is a tribute to "Back to the Future.") Cockroach: Marty's pragmatic companion. Not so ga-ga about the females. Vanessa: The rich and beautiful blonde is Marty's de facto girlfriend, although they are pretty on-and-off. She has a rather hot temper. Betsy: She idolizes Marty and occasionally gets to date him when Vanessa is giving him the silent treatment. Betsy looks almost exactly like Vanessa except for the hair. Suki: A Japanese foreign exchange student who has just come to Hillandale High. She is seriously interested in Marty, and, growing up under a different Code, can pull some stunts that the other girls can't in efforts to win him over. She finds the big "H" on her school's cheerleader outfits hilarious, and no one understands why. Naomi: She has grown up with the other teens but no one ever seemed to notice that she's half Japanese. In fact, very few people ever notice her at all. She becomes fast friends with Suki in hopes of learning more about her heritage. She helps Suki with her schemes to win Marty, but Naomi is secretly curious about pursuing a "GL" relationship with Suki... Unlike most teen characters, Naomi's parents are highly visible: her father owns the Malt Shop and her mother is the school nurse. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THE CHARACTER DESIGNS AND THE STORY!!

Well, you definitely have the "if anime met Archie" style down. I was never a huge fan of the Archie style line art but it definitely had its following. Looks like your fleshing out the characters backgrounds and bios fine. The Venessa and Betsy characters look exactly the same, just with different hair, but you knew that ;)I would deviate and focus on the characters becoming individuals and thier own look. You can have a style without alot of the characters looking similar. But, thats my two cents that you asked for, you know what you're looking for better than I do ;)
