Description

Every year in late fall the U.S. Forest Service is conducting controlled burns in various forests in Arizona. The purpose of these burns is to reduce underbrush and dead wood as a source for fires that occur during spring and summer. These planned burns are announced over the air and, if public roads go through the affected areas, they are also posted. The controlled burns may last from a few days to over a week or longer. The smoke from this particular burn could be seen from 40-50 miles away. On this morning we drove from Pinetop to Eagar, Arizona across the White Mountains along highway 260. This burn was on the Ft. Apache Indian Reservation in Ponderosa Pine forest east of McNary at just below 8,000-ft. level. When we got to this point and saw the morning sun shining through the smoke we pulled over and took a couple of pictures before we continued. This picture was taken on 21 November 2002 and later scanned. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my last upload.

I love the shadows, Sig. They're just like inverted sun rays. Well done.
