My grand father would just turn down the damper and bank the fire at night with adaquate coals til morning. He wasn't execting guests. His house had a furnace and no fireplaces. This is an earlier style I know nothing about. A wood stove for cooking is something from a friend's grandmother's farm. I've stoked that for baking.
